While deepfakes initially emerged as novelty content (like face-swapping celebrities into movie scenes), their use has become far more sinister. Today, deepfakes can be used to impersonate politicians, fabricate confessions, or incite public outrage—and often, they’re indistinguishable from the real thing.

Video has always been journalism’s most powerful tool. It’s used to document protests, uncover corruption, and bring breaking stories to life. But deepfakes have fundamentally changed our relationship with video content. Now, even authentic footage can be cast into doubt.

This creates a dangerous paradox. On one hand, people may be fooled by a convincing fake video. On the other, they may start dismissing real videos as deepfakes—especially when the content challenges their beliefs or damages someone’s reputation. This is known as the “liar’s dividend”—a concept where the mere existence of deepfakes gives wrongdoers an easy excuse: “That wasn’t me. It’s fake.”

As a result, both misinformation and denial of the truth thrive, and the credibility of journalism suffers.

Why This Matters More Than Ever

In a world already overwhelmed by fake news, social media bubbles, and clickbait headlines, deepfakes introduce an even more complex layer of deception. Their implications for journalism and society are far-reaching:

  • Political Manipulation: Deepfakes can be used to sway public opinion, disrupt elections, or ignite geopolitical conflict by making world leaders appear to say or do things they never did.

  • Damage to Reputations: A single fake video can destroy someone’s career, reputation, or personal life—especially if it goes viral before being debunked.

  • Erosion of Trust: As deepfakes become more common, people may stop trusting any video evidence at all, weakening journalism’s ability to hold power accountable.

  • Slow Response Time: Deepfakes often spread faster than fact-checkers can respond. By the time a video is revealed to be fake, the damage is often already done.

Can We Still Trust Video? Only If We Verify It

So where does that leave us? The good news is that while deepfake technology is evolving, so are the tools to fight it. Here are a few of the strategies currently being used or developed:

1. AI Detection Tools
Tech companies and researchers are developing software that can detect deepfakes by analyzing inconsistencies in lighting, shadows, facial movements, and audio sync. While not foolproof, these tools offer a valuable first line of defense.

2. Digital Watermarking and Blockchain
By embedding secure, tamper-proof metadata into video files, creators and journalists can provide a digital trail of authenticity. Blockchain verification systems are being explored as a way to track the origin and edit history of digital media.

3. Newsroom Verification Teams
Major media outlets are investing in training journalists to verify video content using forensic techniques, reverse image searches, and metadata analysis. This ensures that user-generated or third-party videos are carefully vetted before publication.

4. Legislation and Policy
Governments are beginning to introduce laws to regulate the malicious use of deepfakes, particularly in political and criminal contexts. While still in early stages, legal frameworks could help hold bad actors accountable.

5. Public Education and Media Literacy
Perhaps most importantly, the public must be educated on how to spot deepfakes and think critically about the media they consume. When viewers are more aware of the risks, they’re less likely to be manipulated.

So, Can We Still Trust Video Evidence?

In the era of deepfake journalism, blind trust in video content is no longer an option. But that doesn’t mean we have to abandon video as a tool for truth. It simply means we need to adapt.
